Doonan’s Barbershop

This barbershop is owned by some dear friends of mine. We’ve all known each other since we were causing trouble in junior high. It’s owned by the Doonan family: Tony, Brian, and Chad. The master barbers are Brian, Eric, and Grant (who has been cleaning me up for a long time). Chad is an up and coming apprentice barber.

The environment is so laid back! They have a large LCD TV in the lobby with super comfortable seating and all the refreshments you need, water, coffee, and a keg full of beer (free with the cut). They also have TVs at every chair.

A normal cut is $15 for and adult, $10 for seniors, and $13 for kids. If you don’t need a full cut, you can just go for a line-up which costs $5. They also offer a straight razor shave for $15. If you want to go for the whole head, you can get a cut and shave for $28. Oh, also for military, police officers, and firefighters it’s $13 per head.

So, go by and hang with the fellas while getting cleaned up. I’ll be there. See you at the shop!

Skatetown Ice Arena

This is my first post of a sports place. Skatetown in Roseville is the spot for hockey! It’s conveniently located right off highway 80 on the Riverside off ramp. Anything hockey, they hook it up. At Skatetown they have two NHL size rinks, and they keep the ice in fantastic condition!

They have stick time, which is practice, 6:15AM-8:15AM Monday-Friday. I go to stick time three days a week at least. It’s $12 per hour. They offer stick time at other hours, but those are always changing, contact them to get a full schedule. They also have hockey classes, one session a week, that lasts a few months. If you have a busy life, just go for the private lessons and get on the ice with an expert whenever it fits your schedule.

For actual games, they have drop-in and multiple levels of leagues. Drop-in is real fun. Just sign up the week of, preferably a couple days before, and bring a light and dark jersey. Drop-in runs 12:15PM-1:45PM Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 7:15AM-8:45AM on Saturdays. They also have drop-in at other times, but these days are the most consistent. The next league starts in September. The cool thing is you can join with a team by putting one together, meeting players at stick time, or get put on the free agent list. I can’t wait for the next league to start up!

Also, Skatetown has a great pro shop. They offer great brands such as Bauer, Easton, Reebok, and are soon going to start carrying Graf skates. Everything you need is here, protective gear, skates, sticks, and accessories. Oh, and just a heads up, if you’re playing hockey at all, you have to be fully geared up! They also offer lots of figure skating activities and gear, but I would contact the rink for more details.

Come check it out, and as Chaz Michael Michaels says, “Lets kick some ICE!”

Guy Fieri’s Johnny Garlic’s

I’m pumped about this post! I’m trying to return the favor to Guy Fieri. For those of you who don’t know, he is the host of Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. In the show Guy travels the U.S. to find the best mom and pop restaurants. Well, many people don’t know that Guy is from my neighborhood, Northern California. His restaurant Johnny Garlic’s started in Santa Rosa and Windsor. He just recently expanded to Roseville.

I’ve been going to this place for years! Everything at Johnny Garlic’s is to die for. First of all, they give every table fresh warm foccacia bread and a side of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I could seriously just eat the bread and be satisfied! For entrees, they offer salads, burgers, multiple cuts of meat, and pastas. My personal favorite is the chipotle shrimp and hotlinks pasta.

A unique thing that they offer is a daily special called “The Hunter’s Creation.” This changes everyday and includes rare types of game. Elk, alligator, quail, boar, ostrich, etc. If you like to live on the edge, this is the special for you. Might as well have a great restaurant cook something unique for you if you don’t leave your comfort zone too often! Oh, and one thing you need to remember about this place is that you have to save room for dessert!

Also, the service is always phenomenal. Great food, great service, just the kind of place that I love! If you’re ever in Northern California, make sure you stop by Johnny Garlic’s. It’s only in California, so take advantage of it if you’re passing through.

Zano’s Family Italian and Pizzeria

This Italian restaurant in Truckee is a spot you must eat at! Straight classic Italian with a Chicago twist. The owner is Tim and his family. It’s a very family oriented place. Once you start coming here they make you feel like a part of their family. Tim cooks the food with his own hands and works the bar as well. If you go to Zano’s a few times, I guarantee they will know you by name, it’s that friendly of a place.

Let’s start talking food! Oh my god! You seriously cannot go wrong here! Soups and salads are fantastic. Their creamy gorgonzola dressing is my personal favorite. Pizza, ridiculous! The Aunt Dina is wonderful. It has meatballs, ricotta, and garlic. Simple, but absolutely perfect! For the main course, their four cheese manicotti is an easy choice. Last time I was there, I ordered the manicotti and it came out with a slice of pizza on top and then I hear Tim yell from the kitchen, “It’s a Chicago garnish!” Their service is unbeatable.

If you want a good deal go there for lunch. They offer a salad bar with any slice of pizza for $8. For lunch in Truckee you really can’t beat that! Their bar is great too. A very diverse selection of beers and wines. The atmosphere is anything you want it to be. You can sit in the main dinning area, the bar, private family rooms, and the outside patio as well.

If you’re in the area hanging out at the lakes during the summer or snowboarding or skiing in the winter, stop by Zano’s and become part of the family!

DJ’s Comic Kingdom

So, everybody knows that new comics were released yesterday. Okay, so maybe you don’t (well I guess now you do). Wednesdays are the day of the week to look forward to if you’re a comic book reader. Similar to a Friday for a movie buff, or a Tuesday for a hardcore gamer. It’s the day of the week that gets us excited. You know the feeling of waiting a week for the next episode of Dexter, Weeds, The Wire, Entourage, or True Blood? For comic readers that feeling lasts a whole month! Oh, the anticipation! That’s why Wednesdays are so fantastic.

Well, there’s a comic shop located in Reno that can serve up all your super or antihero needs. It goes by the name DJ’s Comic Kingdom. They offer you everything from the Big Two (Marvel and DC) to all the independent labels such as Image. Their collection is expansive, but not too much. This is why this place is so great. If you’ve gone into a ton of comic shops like I have, you would know that some shops just absolutely suck! When I leave some shops I feel the need to call A&E and report them to the show Hoarders. Dust clouds, boxes everywhere, and old ass comics nobody cares about anymore spilling into the aisles. DJ’s is clean, organized, and up to date. All you need in a comic shop.

A great service that they offer is a saver account. This is perfect for people who are pretty busy and cant always make it to the shop first thing on Wednesday mornings. You throw down $20 (which you get back if you close the account), write down all the comics you want, pick them up whenever you can, and receive 10% off all of your purchases. Not a bad program.

This is a great shop and is well worth your attention. Support your local comic shop!

Andy Nguyen’s Vegetarian Restaurant

Located on the outskirts of downtown Sacramento is a little restaurant called Andy Nguyen’s. It’s on Broadway, but don’t drive too fast because you’ll probably miss it. Although it seems like a hole in the wall, this place is a gem. It’s loaded with Asian inspired dishes that are vegetarian and vegan.

To start off your meal, they offer a great selection of appetizers. If you’re going there for the first time I highly recommend the Good Karma Sampler. It has a spring roll, a vegan egg roll, tempura okra, soy baby-back ribs, and the chef’s special (which is constantly changing). Each have their own fantastic dipping sauce and the ribs even have a makeshift bamboo shoot “rib bone.” Absolutely amazing!

The main course includes great stir fry and pho dishes. You really cannot miss here. An interesting choice is their Ten Thousand Buddhas burger. Yes, burger. It’s soy beef topped with a daikon radish and carrot slaw. Perfect mix of spicy and sweet! The side includes tempura fries. Also, they offer a crazy, ever changing selection of freshly made drinks. Fresh fruit and some tender, love, and care are the ingredients. I could talk about these complex and tasty dishes all day, but I don’t have all day, so just get out there and try them for yourself!

Bookshelf at Hooligan Rocks

Bookshelf is one of my favorite book stores. Their main location is at the corner of Donner Pass Road and Highway 89 in Truckee, CA. They also have locations in Tahoe City and Quincy.

The main location is called Bookshelf at Hooligan rocks because in the old days, the 601 Vigilante Committee used to tar and feather hooligans near by. The reason that they used Hooligan Rocks in the name is because they specialize in local area history books. But, these are not the only books that they carry.

This is such a great book store due to the fact that the staff there seems to have read every single book on the planet. Almost every single time I purchase a book there someone says, “oh, that is a great book!” Also, as soon as you walk in the door they are ready to point you in the right direction.

It’s a pretty small store, but they carry most of my favorite authors. If I do not find what I need, they can order it, no problem. I have ordered some very rare and fantastic books from Bookshelf.

Bookshelf also offers a membership. For a low annual fee, you receive 10% off every purchase, chances to get books before their release date, and invites to in-store book signings.

All in all, this is a wonderful place to grab some of your favorite books. You readers out there will not be disappointed, guaranteed!
