As Fresh as Breakfast Can Get: Bette’s Oceanview Diner

My Mother and my Sister had been bugging me to try this place in Berkeley called Bette’s Oceanview Diner for quite some time. Well, I finally made it out there this past weekend, and boy was it great! I’m upset with myself for taking so long to try it out. But now I know!

I tried the Maryland Breakfast, which is house made corned beef and hash, with poached eggs, and your choice of muffin, toast, or a scone. It was delicious! The best hash I’ve ever had (no exaggeration here)! The poached egg was on top, so when you cut into it, the yolk just oozed through the hash. Oh My Goodness! I ordered a fantastic cranberry and orange scone to go with it. I also tried a few bites of their pancake souffle too. It’s a pancake that is made with beaten egg whites and cooked in the oven. It is the lightest pancake to grace the face of this planet! Probably the coolest thing about this place is that the fruit and vegetables are grown by the owners themselves, Bette and Manfred Kroening, on their farm in Sebastopol, California.

The service is friendly and quick. You’ll probably have to wait a little bit to get seated, but that’s how all the greatest restaurants are. Don’t worry though, because you’ll be entertained by the host, Manfred Kroening, the owner himself. He is hilarious! His humor is well worth the wait. Our server was great too. My coffee and water were filled to the brim the entire time.

They also sell muffin, pancake, and scone mixes to go. So, you can have a little taste of Bette’s at home. This diner is a must! When you’re on your way to the bay area, or if you live there, stop by and grab a bite. It will become one of your favorite places to eat instantly!

Delicious Mobile Food in Sacramento: Mini Burger Truck

Think of one of your favorite restaurants. Now think about how great it would be if that restaurant could come to you. Sounds amazing, right? Well the Mini Burger Truck is just that. Fantastic food on four wheels!

You’ve probably seen the Food Network’s show The Great Food Truck Race. But, what you probably didn’t know is that the Mini Burger Truck is a possible contender for the next season. I’ll tell you what, they deserve to be on that show!

Their menu is simple, but perfect. They have four regular burgers that they serve plus a special. The four regulars are the OG (what the name implies, original gangster, or maybe goodness in this case), Da’ Philly (grilled mushrooms and onions, provolone cheese, and roasted red pepper aioli), Cowbell (bacon, pepper jack cheese, grilled onions, and BBQ sauce), and my favorite, The Ninja (Asian slaw, pea shoots, lotus chip, and sriracha aioli). They also offer fries, sweet potato tots, a great selection of refreshments, and organic cotton candy for your sweet tooth. A 2 pack of burgers is $6 and a 3 pack is $8, mix and match.

How do you know where the Mini Burger Truck is going to be serving up tastiness? Check their twitter! They’re all over social media, making them very easy to locate. So give them a follow, find out where they’re going to be posted up, and try it out for yourself. No disappointments here!

Guy Fieri’s Johnny Garlic’s

I’m pumped about this post! I’m trying to return the favor to Guy Fieri. For those of you who don’t know, he is the host of Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. In the show Guy travels the U.S. to find the best mom and pop restaurants. Well, many people don’t know that Guy is from my neighborhood, Northern California. His restaurant Johnny Garlic’s started in Santa Rosa and Windsor. He just recently expanded to Roseville.

I’ve been going to this place for years! Everything at Johnny Garlic’s is to die for. First of all, they give every table fresh warm foccacia bread and a side of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I could seriously just eat the bread and be satisfied! For entrees, they offer salads, burgers, multiple cuts of meat, and pastas. My personal favorite is the chipotle shrimp and hotlinks pasta.

A unique thing that they offer is a daily special called “The Hunter’s Creation.” This changes everyday and includes rare types of game. Elk, alligator, quail, boar, ostrich, etc. If you like to live on the edge, this is the special for you. Might as well have a great restaurant cook something unique for you if you don’t leave your comfort zone too often! Oh, and one thing you need to remember about this place is that you have to save room for dessert!

Also, the service is always phenomenal. Great food, great service, just the kind of place that I love! If you’re ever in Northern California, make sure you stop by Johnny Garlic’s. It’s only in California, so take advantage of it if you’re passing through.

Andy Nguyen’s Vegetarian Restaurant

Located on the outskirts of downtown Sacramento is a little restaurant called Andy Nguyen’s. It’s on Broadway, but don’t drive too fast because you’ll probably miss it. Although it seems like a hole in the wall, this place is a gem. It’s loaded with Asian inspired dishes that are vegetarian and vegan.

To start off your meal, they offer a great selection of appetizers. If you’re going there for the first time I highly recommend the Good Karma Sampler. It has a spring roll, a vegan egg roll, tempura okra, soy baby-back ribs, and the chef’s special (which is constantly changing). Each have their own fantastic dipping sauce and the ribs even have a makeshift bamboo shoot “rib bone.” Absolutely amazing!

The main course includes great stir fry and pho dishes. You really cannot miss here. An interesting choice is their Ten Thousand Buddhas burger. Yes, burger. It’s soy beef topped with a daikon radish and carrot slaw. Perfect mix of spicy and sweet! The side includes tempura fries. Also, they offer a crazy, ever changing selection of freshly made drinks. Fresh fruit and some tender, love, and care are the ingredients. I could talk about these complex and tasty dishes all day, but I don’t have all day, so just get out there and try them for yourself!
